The 'Radical' Renovation of a Victorian Terrace: A Subtle Revolution
The renovation of a Victorian terrace by Retallack Thompson is a testament to the power of subtle transformation. The house, a cherished family home with a rich history, presented a laundry list of challenges. From the invasive roots of neighboring trees to poor stormwater management, the existing structure was in dire need of an upgrade. The architects, led by Jemima Retallack, aimed to maintain the house's future viability while respecting the client's deep connection to the property.
One of the key design choices was the use of a spiral steel staircase, a rare and historic feature in the neighborhood. The architects proposed a 'like for like' replacement of the existing timber structure in galvanised steel, a bold move that paid homage to the past while introducing a modern twist. The steel, with its reflective and bright qualities, creates a striking contrast with the heritage brown brick of the house, clearly delineating the old and the new.
This material palette was extended to the interiors, where new concrete floors, wax-finished plaster walls, and thin galvanised steel set windows blur the boundaries between the kitchen, living space, and outdoor courtyard. The heritage bones at the front were meticulously restored, including the original timber floors and the red-brick masonry. The front balcony, once damaged, was transformed with the addition of bluestone cobblestone, further enhancing the connection between the interior and exterior spaces.
What makes this renovation particularly fascinating is the architects' ability to strike a balance between renewal and conservation. By embracing the unique features of the existing structure and introducing carefully selected modern elements, Retallack Thompson has created a home that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing, ready to embrace the next 100 years of its existence.
